A nurse sued Brigham and Women’s Hospital for discrimination and retaliation and was awarded more than $28 million by a jury last Wednesday, according to a report from The Boston Globe.
Gessy Toussaint filed the suit against the hospital in 2014, which described an incident where she stuck up for a fellow nurse who is also of Haitian-American descent who she believed was a victim of verbal abuse.
Following the incident, Toussaint said, the hospital targeted her by investigating her for alleged instances of poor patient care.
After three days of deliberation, a Suffolk Superior Court jury said Toussaint did not prove race discrimination but did say that the hospital and manager Mary Ann Kenyon were guilty of retaliation.
