More than half of American job seekers have lost faith in the hiring process, citing ghost postings, scams and ineffective application systems, according to a Checkr survey. 58% say securing an interview through traditional job boards feels “nearly impossible,” while 66% have applied for jobs that turned out to be inactive. 83% believe ghost hiring has eroded trust between applicants and employers.

Sheldon Arora, CEO of StaffDNA, called the job market “severely broken.” He noted, “Employers struggle to quickly find the right candidates to fill roles, while job seekers are burnt out from applying to jobs and getting no responses.” He added, “There are too many fake job postings that are essentially scams. Job seekers often apply to jobs that seem legitimate, but their information is stolen and sold with every click. Their resumes aren’t getting seen.”

Arora stressed that dramatic changes in the job-search process will be necessary over the next decade. “Companies must not only embrace AI but also reduce layers of administrative red tape to make hiring faster and more personalized,” he said.

Younger job seekers are already shifting their approach, relying more on social media and questioning the future relevance of resumes. Experts suggest that while resumes may evolve, job seekers should still optimize them, along with LinkedIn, to stand out. With hiring becoming more competitive, Arora and others believe the system must adapt to prioritize real skills, transparency and efficiency.
